The provincial government expects the province’s cannabis sales to help offset budget shortfalls by increasing excise tax revenues, with an estimated $2.7 billion in 2023. However, local governments have yet to receive any money from the province, despite the Union of B.C. Municipalities advocating for a 50-50 split of the proceeds. Until municipal governments receive their share, they are directing excise tax revenues to the province’s Consolidated Revenue Fund, which is used to finance community services.
